Grandmothers

JCB 1988Although the idea of forming the Grandmothers had been muted in early 1970, it was late 1980 before the Grandmothers came together. First, as a collaborative effort to produce an album, and then as a touring band that included two tours of Europe in 1981 and 1982. The band broke up at this point due to internal frictions. Jimmy reformed the band as the Austin Grandmothers in 1988 with new members and this line-up toured Europe in May 1993 after Jimmy moved there. With a reformed line-up, once again including original Mothers Bunk Gardner and Don Preston, the band continued to tour Europe through 1993 and 1994 until external forces brought the touring to a halt. In 1998, a reformed Grandmothers band toured again in Europe. Then in 2000, after first touring Europe, the Grandmothers completed a monster 2-month tour of the States, with Jimmy vowing “never again”. This was effectively the end of Jimmy’s involvement with the Grandmothers, versions of which continue to tour.
